Clean Up Drive on World Earth Day

In support of the “Clean Halong Bay Program” and to celebrate World Earth Day, Bhaya Cruises undertook a “Clean Up Drive” in Halong Bay on 22 April 2009. Bhaya Cruises and the floating fishing village of Vung Vieng, about 20km from Halong City, joined forces in a clean-up and awareness campaign. The annual cleanup event collects the plastic bags, wrappings and packaging that wash around the waters of the bay, sullying its picturesque beauty and posing a clear and present danger to the marine ecosystem. This year’s Clean Up Drive skimmed up over 1 ton of unsightly refuse from the waters of the Bay. The Clean Up Drive aims to enhance environmental awareness and education for cruise ship passengers, tour operators, service providers and the local community; and to further explore Halong bay’s ecology in an effort to learn how to better protect it. As one of the most visited cruise destinations in Vietnam, Halong Bay requires a delicate balance between the needs of the tourism industry and the protection demanded by one of the World’s most unique Natural Heritage sites. Bhaya Cruises is an active participant and advocate for “Clean Halong Bay” programs which foster eco-responsible cruising.
