Visa should be the first thing you check before traveling to any country. There is no different when you come to Vietnam.
So do you need a visa to visit Vietnam?

Most likely, Yes.

The visa requirements vary from country to country and length of stay. If you hold a “good” passport which is on the Vietnam visa exemption list, you can stay here without a visa for a certain period of time. If not, you can easily get a Vietnam visa on arrival.

Vietnam visa on arrival
If you are not from countries listed above, you have the options to obtain a Vietnam visa via Vietnam Embassy or a consulate in your home country, or an authorized travel agency. From February 1, 2017, foreign tourists can apply for a Vietnam visa online.
However this is still a pilot program, so the number of eligible countries and border gates that accept e-visa is limited.
The best way to get your visa is to apply for a Vietnam Visa on Arrival. This type of visa means the Vietnam Immigration Office approve your visa in advance and you will get it stamped when you arrive.
Be noticed that visa on arrival only works if your flight into the country via International airports in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. And your passport must be valid for at least six months and has enough empty pages.

Processing time
For a duration of stay that is less than 30 days, it usually takes 2 to 3 working days. You can pay more to speed up the process.
If you stay longer than 30 days, it will take around 7 to 10 working days.

Vietnam visa on arrival Cost
The cost varies depending on countries but this price is correct for the majority. US citizens also pay USD45 for the whole process.

An overnight stay on a boat in Ha Long Bay with Bhaya Cruises was the perfect contrast to a few days in Hanoi. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful from the mini-bus driver (who picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel), check-in receptionist and all staff on board. The boat was clean and well looked after, lots of activities, food OK and cabin comfortable. This was an unforgettable experience

Couldn't go wrong with Bhaya Cruises. There were so many options to choose from, and the hotel even offered us more, but Bhaya turned out to be the right choice. Compared to the other boats in Halong Bay, the Bhaya boats appeared to be in the best condition. We were greeted warmly by the crew, both dockside and once on the boat. There was plenty of space for us to move about and plenty of activities (not to mention scenery) to keep us occupied. We could have stayed in a few locations, the beach, in particular, a little longer, but everything went smoothly and I would recommend Bhaya to anyone wanting to experience Halong Bay.

I cannot recommend this trip enough. You MUST do it! From the moment we were picked up the service was spectacular. The boat is well appointed, with luxurious bathrooms which even contain a bath! Having been on cruises before I was expecting a pokey bathroom you could not turn around in. The rooms are spacious, each with their own private balcony. The food was spectacular. The bay was amazing to see - the caves, kayaking and cooking class great fun.
